Industrial Control allows to control industrial plants such
as chemical plants, thermal processes, assembly lines, etc...
Generally, industrial control systems arebased on a 3 layers
Field Layer : Communication interface
with the process. The communication with sensors and actuators is performed
by a robust field bus adapted to industrial environment such as Profibus,
Modbus, CAN, OPC, WolrdFip, etc..
Control Layer : Contains the intelligence
of the control system with the knowledge of the process. All calculations
to manage actuators are performed here, generally by a cyclic algorithm
executed in PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) or in FEC (Front-End Computers).
These algorithms read sensor values and supervision orders to take decisions
and control actuators.
Supervision Layer : Allows the Human-Machine
Interface (HMI). Generally, a database archives process data and operators
can manage and control the processes through supervision terminals such
as computers or touch panels using the Ethernet network..
At CERN, industrial control is using a standard called UNICOS.
